Feeding

As long as we keep an eye on their weight, our horse graze on grass all spring, summer and autumn and come winter are mostly fed hay.

We use coloured hay nets for each horse so we can weigh forage in the winter.

Horses should have 2% of their body weight every day and so for example, Biscuit who is approx 300kg should have 6kg a day, he shares a winter turn out paddock with Blue,  so they share hay in the day and then we weigh 3kg for the night hay net.

Our horses are all good doers in light work and so don’t usually extra feed. We do have some we keep just in case they have a low appetite for hay or look like they are not keeping weight on or are under the weather or needing any treatment for anything the youngsters are on Baileys Youngstock Cubes and the oldies are on meadowsweet with Tumeric.

We also like Fast Fibre by Allen and Page for both.

These are all non heating feeds and the more they work then they get feed as well as hay.

While we are still renovating the paddocks they are in light work and holding good weight and health so are not on anything extra.
